Continuation to the Frost Dragon Dd Book
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the latest Dungeons & Dragons book, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, available now from Wizards of the Coast.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaidenis an epic adventure that takes players from levels 1-12 as they attempt to stop the deity Auril, who has kept the titular region in a state of everlasting night for over two years. While that adventure is sure to occupy groups for several months, all good adventures eventually come to an end, leaving a question as to just what the party should do next.
Right now, there are no official adventures that follow up onRime of the Frostmaiden, and the Dungeons & Dragons community has not yet had enough time with the story to create content of their own. However, there are a lot of adventures that share themes, ideas and plot points withRime of the Frostmaiden. Here are four you might want to play after finishing the newest Dungeons & Dragons adventure.
Legacy of the Crystal Shard
R.A. Salvatore, James Wyatt and Jeffrey Ludwig'sLegacy of the Crystal Shardoriginally released in 2013, though it allows players to use any edition of Dungeons & Dragons since 3.5e. At 32 pages,Legacy of the Crystal Shardis a short adventure for players level 1-3 in which the party uses fighting and roleplaying skills to protect Icewind Dale against the threat posed by various factions.
While short,Legacy of the Crystal Shard-- which is set in 1485 DR -- is closely tied toRime of the Frostmaiden, which takes place at least four years later in the same location.Rime of the Frostmaiden also presents players with the opportunity to interact with one of the key antagonists in Legacy of the Crystal shard, making this an essential follow up for anyone who wants to get the full story behindRime of the Frostmaiden. As this adventure is a prequel designed for lower level characters, players will have to create new adventurers, which is one drawback to choosing this adventure.
How the Mighty Are Fallen
One of the endings forRime of the Frostmaidensees the party sent back in time to before the collapse of the Netheril. Although there are no official 5e adventures set in the area at this time, that doesn't mean there aren't any in general. For those looking to continue with their characters past the events ofRime of the Frostmaiden, Dale "Slade" Henson'sHow the Mighty Are Fallenmay just be the right choice.
Requiring theNetheril: Empire of Magicsourcebook,How the Mighty Are Fallenis a 2e adventure for players between levels 13 and 14, which is right where the party ends up at the end of Rime of the Frostmaiden. That being said, becauseHow the Mighty Are Fallen is a 2e adventure, it will require some homebrewing and tweaking to get just right. For the most part this adventure deals more with exploring and understanding Netheril, so it's the perfect choice to help establish that new world for players.
Call From the Deep
While published by Dungeons Masters Guild rather than Wizards of the Coast, JVC Parry'sCall From the Deepwill definitely appeal to those who foundRime of the Frostmaiden's illithids and cosmic horror intriguing. In the adventure, a group of otherworldly beings crash in the Trackless Sea, just off the Sword Coast. Around the same time, piracy becomes more rampant, raising questions as to just what is going on.
Call From the Deep 5e adventure will take players from levels 1-12, making it a seriously long campaign, just like Rime of the Frostmaiden. Like others on this list, players likely won't be able to use their characters fromRime of the Frostmaiden.
Curse of Strahd Revamped
Generally considered one of the best Dungeons & Dragons adventures ever,Curse of Strahdsees players contending with the cunning, brilliant vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich. The adventure, which takes players from levels 1-10, is definitely horror-inspired, so those who likedRime of the Frostmaiden's use of that genre will certainly enjoyCurse of Strahd.
That being said, Curse of Strahdis the only adventure on this list not set in the Forgotten Realms, instead taking place in Ravenloft. Players will also need to create new characters for the adventure. However, with the upcomingRevampedrelease on Oct. 20, players could certainly do worse than pass the time withCurse of Strahduntil there are more adventures to followRime of the Frostmaiden.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is on sale now from Wizards of the Coast.
